In a move aimed at modernizing India’s mobile connectivity landscape, Tata Communications has partnered with state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) to roll out eSIM services across the country. The initiative, powered by Tata Communications’ Move platform, enables users to activate mobile services remotely—eliminating the need for physical SIM cards.
Seamless Connectivity with eSIM
With this rollout, BSNL customers can now use eSIMs for 2G, 3G, and 4G services via remote provisioning using a simple QR code. The service is particularly beneficial for users with dual-SIM devices, as it allows them to run an eSIM alongside a physical SIM. This flexibility will also help frequent international travelers connect with local operators without needing to swap out SIM cards.
The solution is powered by Tata Communications’ GSMA-accredited Subscription Management platform (Move), delivered through its subsidiary Tata Communications Collaboration Services Pvt. Ltd. (TCCSPL). This infrastructure supports BSNL in efficiently managing eSIM provisioning across its nationwide subscriber base.
A Strategic Leap for BSNL
Speaking about the initiative, A Robert Ravi, Chairman and Managing Director of BSNL, said:
“The launch of Pan-India eSIM service represents a strategic advancement in our national telecom capabilities. With Tata Communications’ strong connectivity expertise and innovation, we are enhancing the flexibility, security, and efficiency of mobile services for citizens across India. This aligns with our commitment to fostering digital independence and ensuring robust infrastructure for the future.”
BSNL’s Broader Expansion Push
The nationwide eSIM rollout comes amid BSNL’s broader expansion efforts.
- In August 2025, BSNL first began offering eSIM services in Tamil Nadu.
- The telco also launched its 4G network in Delhi in August.
- BSNL recently signed a one-year MoU with the Department of Posts, enabling India Post’s vast network of 1.65 lakh post offices to sell SIM cards and provide mobile recharge services.
- In a landmark event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated BSNL’s indigenous 4G network from Jharsuguda, Odisha, commissioning 97,500 mobile towers built entirely with domestic technology at an estimated cost of ₹37,000 crore.
Why This Matters
The BSNL–Tata Communications partnership marks a pivotal step toward India’s digital self-reliance in telecom infrastructure. With growing smartphone adoption, especially eSIM-supported devices like the iPhone series and premium Android flagships, the rollout could boost BSNL’s competitiveness against private telecom giants, while offering users greater flexibility and future-ready connectivity.
