Kia India has entered the CNG segment with the launch of its first CNG-powered vehicle, the Kia Carens CNG. The new model is available as a dealer-level fitment on the existing Premium (O) trim and comes at a starting price of ₹11.77 lakh (ex-showroom).
Pricing and Variant Details
The CNG kit, sourced from Lovato, can be added to the 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol variant for an additional ₹77,900 over the standard version, which is priced at ₹10.99 lakh. This takes the total cost of the Carens CNG to ₹11.77 lakh.
While the petrol engine produces 115 hp, the CNG-powered version is expected to deliver slightly lower output. The kit is compatible only with the Premium (O) variant, ensuring the same equipment list as the petrol model.
CNG Kit and Warranty
The CNG system for the Carens comes with a 3-year/1,00,000 km third-party warranty. However, since it is a dealer-installed kit and not a factory-fitted option, Kia has not disclosed the official power or mileage figures. Additionally, the CNG version has not undergone homologation testing.
Features and Comfort
The Carens Premium (O) variant continues to offer an extensive list of comfort and convenience features, including:
- 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Roof-mounted AC vents for the 2nd and 3rd rows
- One-touch electric folding for 2nd-row seats
- Semi-leatherette upholstery
- Keyless entry and electric ORVMs
- Rearview camera and shark-fin antenna
It is currently unclear how the addition of the CNG cylinder impacts the boot capacity, which stands at 216 litres in the petrol and diesel models.
Safety
The Kia Carens continues to emphasize passenger safety with a robust suite of features, including:
- Six airbags
- ABS with EBD, traction control, and brake assist
- Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) and Downhill Brake Control (DBC)
- All-wheel disc brakes
- Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
- ISOFIX child seat anchors and rear parking sensors
The Carens has previously earned a three-star GNCAP safety rating, reinforcing Kia’s focus on occupant protection.
Market Context
With this launch, Kia India becomes the third automaker to offer a dealer-fitted CNG option in the country, following Honda and Nissan, which provide similar setups for models like the City, Amaze, and Magnite. Meanwhile, Citroën continues to offer factory-fitted CNG kits for its lineup.
Conclusion
The Kia Carens CNG marks the brand’s official foray into India’s growing CNG vehicle segment, combining fuel efficiency, practicality, and strong safety credentials. Although it’s not a factory-installed system, the move is expected to attract buyers looking for an affordable and eco-friendly MPV alternative.
