Toyota’s iconic Land Cruiser FJ is gearing up for an India debut around the festive season of 2028, three years from now, according to a new report by Autocar India. The SUV, which had its global premiere in Japan last week, is currently being showcased at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show. While Japanese deliveries are scheduled to begin by mid-2026, Indian buyers will need to wait a little longer for this much-anticipated off-roader.
Built on Fortuner and Hilux Platform
The “FJ” in the Land Cruiser name stands for Freedom and Joy. The SUV shares Toyota’s proven IMV architecture with the Fortuner and Hilux, emphasizing durability and capability. Measuring just over 4.5 metres in length, the FJ takes design inspiration from the larger Land Cruiser Prado, featuring a boxy stance and upright proportions.
According to reports, the India-spec Land Cruiser FJ will be offered with strong hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains, with no diesel engine in the lineup — a clear nod to Toyota’s focus on cleaner powertrains.

Compact Yet Rugged
With dimensions of 1,855 mm in width, 1,960 mm in height, and a 2,580 mm wheelbase, the SUV will come in a two-row, five-seat configuration. Despite its compact footprint, Toyota claims the FJ is a highly capable off-roader, boasting a ground clearance of 215 mm and a turning radius of 5.5 metres. The underbody is reinforced with floor braces for added rigidity.
Design highlights include removable heavy bumpers, thick side cladding, C-shaped tail lamps, and an externally mounted spare wheel. Buyers can also opt for retro-styled round headlamps, reminiscent of classic Land Cruiser models. The SUV will also feature Toyota Safety Sense, which includes advanced driver-assistance features such as the Pre-Collision Safety System.
Interior and Features
Inside, the Land Cruiser FJ’s cabin layout mirrors that of the Land Cruiser Prado, offering circular AC vents, chunky grab handles, and tactile physical buttons. The dashboard features a 12.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system, complemented by a digital instrument cluster with a simple layout. The materials used throughout the cabin emphasize rugged durability over luxury, with hard-wearing fabrics and plastics designed for practicality.
Engine and Performance
Powering the SUV is a 2.7-litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 161 bhp and 246 Nm of torque. The engine is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and a part-time 4WD system, ensuring off-road capability when needed. The FJ will serve as the entry-level model in Toyota’s prestigious Land Cruiser lineup.
Expected Price and Rivals
In India, the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ will compete with models like the Mahindra Thar Roxx, Force Gurkha, and Maruti Suzuki Jimny. It is likely to be positioned between the Urban Cruiser Hyryder and the Fortuner, with an expected starting price of around ₹20 lakh (ex-showroom).
